Why We Engineered a New Way to Navigate Curves in Blender
As a long-time motion graphics and 3D animation producer in Phoenix, I believe that the difference between a “good” shot and a “cinematic” one involves developing my own tools. On a recent animation project, I discovered that Blender lacks a hotkey to navigate from one vertex to the next—a feature that I find extremely useful -and badly needed- when working with complex curves. I was surprised by this gap and decided to develop a custom Blender add-on to solve it.
Whether it’s a branded soda can weaving through a deep-space asteroid field, multiple arrows racing along complex spirals to illustrate air dynamics, or a camera performing a frame-perfect sweep around a product—we rely on curves to define precise motion. But once a path becomes complex (braided, looped, or spanning hundreds of points), navigating it manually becomes a technical bottleneck.
The Problem: The Navigation Gap
Blender is a powerhouse, but it lacks a native, streamlined way to “hop” between individual vertices on a curve using simple keyboard commands. When you’re fine-tuning a dynamic flight pattern, clicking tiny points in 3D space is inefficient. You lose the “flow” of the animation when you have to hunt for the next vertex.
The Solution: Curve Navigator v1.3
At DeCarlo Media, we believe that if the right tool doesn’t exist, you build it. I developed Curve Navigator to bridge this gap. Written specifically for the latest demands of Blender 5, this tool allows animators to:
- Cycle through vertices instantly using the . and , keys.
- Identify points accurately with a toggleable “Vertex Label” system (Shift+N) that shows indices directly in the viewport.
- Focus & Zoom (Ctrl + .) to jump the camera directly to the point you’re editing—essential for large-scale scenes.

Why This Matters
Some might wonder: Why does a video production company in Arizona need to write custom scripts for 3D? Isn’t software development reserved for the largest animation houses?
The answer is Precision and Adaptability. When a client project requires a movement that has never been done before, or a technical visualization that demands mathematical accuracy, we don’t say “the software can’t do that.” DeCarlo Media is now capable of extending tool capabilities through custom Python coding.
This “Creative Engineering” mindset ensures that our clients’ visions are never limited by “out-of-the-box” features. It is also one of the main reasons we believe Blender is an ideal tool for high-end production work.
We are now developing specialized add-ons for Blender and custom Adobe After Effects scripts. This opens new possibilities that benefit our workflow and the quality of work we deliver to our clients.
